Why Did My Childcare Gap Fee Change? CCS Checklist

If your childcare gap fee changed, it does not always mean something is wrong.

It usually means one of the inputs changed.

Your gap fee can move because of your centre's fees, session hours, CCS percentage, withholding, income estimate, subsidised hours, absences, provider reporting or family changes.

Start here.

The 2-minute gap fee check

1. Did your centre fee change?

Check the daily fee or session fee on your childcare statement.

If the gross fee went up, your gap fee may rise even if your CCS percentage stayed the same.

2. Did the hours charged change?

CCS is counted in hours, not just days.

A 12-hour session uses more subsidised hours than a 9-hour session.

If your centre changed session length, or your booking changed, your gap fee can change too.

3. Did your CCS percentage change?

Your CCS percentage is based on your family income estimate and other circumstances. If your income estimate increased, your CCS percentage may have reduced.

4. Is the fee above the hourly cap?

Your CCS percentage applies to the lower of your provider's hourly fee or the relevant hourly rate cap. If your provider charges above the cap, you usually pay more of the gap yourself.

5. Did your subsidised hours change?

From 5 January 2026, eligible families generally get at least 72 hours of subsidised child care per fortnight. Some families may receive 100 hours depending on recognised participation, exemptions or child-specific rules.

If your booked care goes above your subsidised hours, some hours may not be subsidised.

6. Did withholding, absences or adjustments appear?

Your childcare statement may include withholding, absences, adjustments, debt recovery or provider reporting changes.

These can change the amount you pay even when your normal booking looks the same.

What to look for on your childcare statement

Look for these lines first:

Statement item Why it matters
Gross fee The full amount charged by the centre.
Hours charged CCS is worked out in hours.
CCS percentage Your estimated subsidy rate.
CCS paid The amount paid toward the fee.
Withholding The part held back to reduce overpayment risk.
Gap fee What your family pays.
Absences Can affect payment depending on circumstances.
Adjustments May relate to previous weeks or corrections.

If the gross fee, hours, CCS paid or withholding changed, you have your first clue.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did my childcare gap fee suddenly increase?

Common reasons include a centre fee increase, longer session hours, a lower CCS percentage, fees above the hourly cap, withholding, absences, reduced subsidised hours or provider reporting changes.

Can my gap fee change if my centre fees did not?

Yes. Your gap fee can change if your CCS percentage, withholding, hours, absences, income estimate or family circumstances change.

Why did my CCS payment go down?

Your CCS payment may go down if your family income estimate increased, your subsidised hours changed, your fee is above the hourly cap, or withholding or adjustments apply.

Should I ask Centrelink or my childcare centre?

Start with your childcare statement. If the issue is the fee, hours or attendance reporting, ask your provider. If it relates to CCS percentage, income, recognised participation or family circumstances, check myGov or Services Australia.
